Educator
During the 1930s and 1940s, a time when Fairfax County public schools were segregated by race, Lutie Coates taught at the Floris “Colored” School, a two-room schoolhouse. Mrs. Coates often made warm fresh soup to serve to her students as many did not have the opportunity or ability to have a nutritious meal. Many of the Coates family members continue to live in the area and have been honored guests at Coates events.
Lutie Lewis Coates Elementary is located in Herndon, Virginia.
